Blocked DPF Symptoms: Assessing the Vehicle After Reported Symptoms
When Mr J’s Discovery Sport arrived at Athersmith Motor Services, Ulverston, the first priority was to sit down with him and understand the full picture. We asked when the warning lights had first appeared, how the vehicle had been behaving since, and whether there had been any recent changes to how the car was typically driven.
Short, stop-start journeys are among the most common contributors to DPF problems, as they prevent the engine from reaching and holding the temperatures required for regeneration. Getting a clear picture of Mr J’s usual driving habits was a key part of the assessment before any testing took place.

- Land Rover P246B fault code — P246B-00, indicating that the conditions needed for regeneration were not being consistently achieved, or that the regeneration process was being interrupted.
Both codes pointed toward DPF issues, but on their own they only told part of the story. To understand what had led to these fault codes and the associated warning lights, and to make sure the correct repair was carried out, a more detailed inspection was required.

Land Rover DPF Fault: Identifying the Root Cause
The stored fault codes confirmed excessive soot loading in the DPF and that regeneration wasn’t completing successfully. But carrying out an effective repair meant our technicians first needed to establish why the filter had reached that state. A Land Rover DPF fault can stem from several different causes, and the correct approach to resolving it depends entirely on what’s driving the problem. Each potential factor was investigated in turn, ruling out one possibility before moving on to the next.
Step 1: External DPF Inspection

- Diluted oil degrades over time and can affect overall engine condition, while the ongoing failure to regenerate meant soot continued building in the DPF with no way for the system to clear it.

Step 3: Air Filter Condition Check
The air filter was inspected next. A restricted air filter reduces airflow into the engine, which can lower combustion efficiency and increase particulate production. This increases the volume of particulates produced and places a greater load on the DPF over time.
- The air filter was found to be in acceptable condition and was ruled out as a contributing factor.
Step 4: DPF Pressure Readings
Our technicians took differential pressure readings across the DPF using the dealer-level diagnostic equipment.
- The readings came back high, confirming the filter was carrying a significant soot load.
- This was consistent with the Land Rover P2463 fault code recorded during the initial scan.
Step 5: Boost Leak Assessment
The intake and boost system was then checked for leaks. A boost leak reduces combustion efficiency and can accelerate the rate at which soot loads the DPF.
- No leaks were found.
With every check now complete, the full picture had come together. The DPF had been unable to regenerate, allowing soot to accumulate steadily over time. The oil dilution identified during the inspection was consistent with repeated failed regeneration attempts. That progressive soot build-up had eventually reached the point where the warning lights were triggered, the vehicle entered limp mode, and power was significantly reduced.
No sensor faults or hardware failures were identified that would prevent regeneration, indicating the issue was most likely linked to driving conditions and interrupted regeneration cycles.
Repairing the Land Rover DPF Fault

Engine oil and filter change
The engine oil had become fuel-diluted as a result of repeated failed regeneration attempts and was no longer providing adequate engine protection.

Forced DPF regeneration and system reset
Once the filter had been cleaned, a service regeneration was initiated using the manufacturer-level software.
- Following the regeneration, relevant DPF adaptation and soot loading values were reset in accordance with manufacturer procedures, ensuring the engine management system could accurately monitor the filter following cleaning and regeneration.
- The fault memory was cleared and the system retested. No new fault codes returned.

On the Ingenium diesel engine, frequent short journeys can prevent DPF regeneration from completing. When regeneration is interrupted, fuel introduced through late post-injection, intended to raise exhaust temperatures for regeneration, can wash past the piston rings.
